Mr. and Miss Juneteenth Recognition & Award Guidelines

Purpose

  • The Mr. and Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Award celebrates and honors young leaders who exemplify excellence in education, leadership, and a commitment to preserving and promoting the cultural legacy of Juneteenth.


Eligibility

  • Applicants must meet the following criteria:
       •    Age: Must be between 14 and 18 years old
       •    Residency: Must reside in Virginia
       •    Education: Must be currently enrolled in middle school or high school
       •    Cultural Awareness: Must demonstrate an understanding of the significance of Juneteenth and its impact on the African
                   American community


Application Process

  • Applicants are required to submit the following:
       •    Application Form: Completed official application
       •    Essay: A 500–750 word essay addressing:
       •    ESSAY PROMPT: Describe how you demonstrate leadership, confidence, and community impact in your school or

             community. Explain how this opportunity will help you grow and make a difference.
       •    Letters of Recommendation: Two letters from teachers, community leaders, or mentors who can speak to your character               and leadership

  • Interview: Selected candidates may be invited to participate in an interview as part of the selection process


Selection Criteria

  • Applicants will be evaluated based on:
       •    Academic Achievement: Grades and overall academic performance
       •    Community Involvement: Volunteer work, leadership roles, and service contributions
       •    Cultural Engagement: Knowledge of and involvement in activities related to Juneteenth and African American culture
       •    Personal Presentation: Ability to represent the title with confidence, professionalism, and strong public speaking skills


Award Details   

 

Scholarship Amount: $1,500

  • Presentation: Winners will be crowned during the Juneteenth Celebration and awarded their scholarship at the event

  • Responsibilities: Titleholders are expected to actively promote Juneteenth and participate in community events throughout their reign


Deadline

  • All applications must be submitted by 11:00 PM (Eastern Time) on May 30, 2026
    Late applications will not be considered
